Who we are

Global Health European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership 3 (Global Health EDCTP3) is a unique European and African partnership working to improve health through research and development. Backed by the European Union and over 40 countries, we focus on infectious diseases that continue to harm millions across sub-Saharan Africa.

We fund clinical trials and studies, train researchers, and strengthen the African clinical research ecosystem, ensuring that solutions are developed where they are most needed and global health security is increased.

Our vision

Our vision is to reduce the individual, social, and economic burden of poverty-related infectious diseases, including neglected, emerging and re-emerging diseases, in sub-Saharan Africa.

Our mission

Our mission is to reduce mortality and morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting global collaborative research, capacity strengthening, and speeding up the development, evaluation, and implementation of innovative solutions to prevent, detect, treat and monitor infectious diseases.

We fund projects through the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation (R&I) framework. These projects are selected through open calls for proposals and bring together partners across sectors and continents.

Funding of the programme

Global Health EDCTP3 runs from 2021 to 2031 with a target budget of €2 billion. To date, €1.84 billion has been pledged by the following contributors:

  • European Union: €890 million.
  • EDCTP Association (member countries): €550 million.
  • Third parties: €400 million.

Our legal mandate

Global Health EDCTP3 is a joint undertaking created by the Council Regulation (EU) 2021/2085, under Article 187 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU. This legal structure provides the basis for strong governance, shared funding, and coordinated research.

Global Health EDCTP3 also contributes to broader EU goals. These include boosting competitiveness, driving innovation, and supporting scientific excellence.

The programme aligns with key policies such as Horizon Europe, the EU Global Health Strategy, the AU–EU Innovation Agenda, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: ensuring healthy lives and well-being for all.
