Achim Hörauf

Prof. Achim Hörauf is Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Parasitology (IMMIP) at the University Hospital Bonn and Professor of Parasitology at the University of Bonn. He is a leading expert in neglected tropical diseases, particularly filariasis. His research focuses on understanding filarial diseases, including parasite-induced immune responses and genetics, and on developing improved diagnostics and treatments.

Prof. Hörauf has collaborated with leading African scientists on filariasis for more than 20 years and has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on numerous international clinical trials. He also co-directs an international consortium conducting randomized clinical trials on treatments for filarial lymphedema.

Alongside his research, he is actively engaged in translating scientific evidence into policy. He has served on the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Parasitic Diseases, advised the Carter Center and the German Federal Ministry of Research, and currently chairs the German Network against Neglected Tropical Diseases, which advises the German government on neglected tropical disease and global health policy.
