Katharina Kranzer is Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and LMU University of Munich. Based in Harare, she directs the Health Research Unit Zimbabwe (THRU-Zim) at the Biomedical Research and Training Institute.
Her work spans tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, and the strengthening of health and laboratory systems in high-burden settings, informed by her earlier role directing Germany's National and WHO Supranational TB Reference Laboratory. She leads the EDCTP-funded Southern African Research Capacity Network (SOFAR), is work package lead for the EDCTP-funded CREATIVE MSc network, and co-directs the Wellcome Trust-funded CREATE PhD programmes strengthening world-class, Africa-led research capacity across Southern Africa. She also serves on multiple WHO guideline development groups on TB screening and diagnostics.
Author of over 225 peer-reviewed publications, she has received the 2025 EDCTP Scientific Leadership Prize for a European Woman and the 2020 Chalmers Medal from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.
