The implementation of Global Health EDCTP3 is ensured by a Programme Office based in Brussels, under the lead of an Executive Director.
The Programme Office implements the Global Health EDCTP3 Work Programme by ensuring good governance between the different partners and covering the whole project lifecycle, from launching calls for proposals to monitoring the resulting projects.
Global Health EDCTP3 has a diverse global team bringing essential skills and experience from the public sector and private sectors, academic, non-profit and others. The team takes care of all the scientific, legal, financial, dissemination and communication aspects of the programme.
Executive Director
 | Dr Michael Makanga started his tenure as the Executive Director of Global Health EDCTP3 on 16 November 2023. He has extensive experience in the global health research sector and was previously the Executive Director of the EDCTP Association. He is a clinician-scientist with nearly thirty years of health and clinical research work experience in African and European institutions. He has a medical degree from Makerere University, a master’s and PhD in pharmacology and therapeutics from the Liverpool University and School of Tropical Medicine, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He has vast experience in global health, research for health capacity development, engagement with policy makers, ethics and regulatory authorities in both Africa and Europe. Moreover, he has served in various scientific and policy advisory boards involved in developing medical products and associated technologies for infectious diseases, including the World Bank, international product development organisations, philanthropies and pharmaceutical companies. The Team
The Programme Office’s tasks include:
- Developing and implementing the Work Programme, including organising calls for proposals and the evaluation of proposals
- Monitoring funded projects throughout the entire project life-cycle
- Liaising with the Global Health EDCTP3 partners to ensure timely information sharing and feedback on the Joint Undertaking’s activities
- Disseminating and communicating on Global Health EDCTP3’s activities and funded projects.
