Marleen Temmerman

She was appointed Director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization in 2012. In this role, she provided strategic leadership on global reproductive, maternal, and adolescent health, contributing to major international policy processes including the Millennium Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. She also led the development of the technical content for the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health (2016–2030). 

Following her WHO tenure, she joined Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya, where she serves as Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health. 

She has held numerous positions, including UNESCO Chair on Youth Leadership and member of the Global Health EDCTP3 Scientific Advisory Committee. She has also received several honours, including Commander of the Order of Leopold (2008), the British Medical Journal Lifetime Achievement Award (London, 2010), and the EDCTP Award for Outstanding Female Scientist (2016), among others.
