Tips for a successful project proposal

Whether you are applying to Global Health EDCTP3 calls for the first time or are already experienced with EU funding, the following tips will help you prepare a strong and competitive project proposal under the Global Health EDCTP3 Work Programme 2026.

1. Read the call topic carefully

Start by exploring the Work Programme 2026 and thoroughly reading the call topics. Make sure you understand the context, scope, and expected impact. Verify that your project idea meets the topic requirements (and not the other way around).

2. Understand the bigger picture

Consult the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). This key document outlines the programme’s vision, mission, and objectives, including the ten research priorities that shape the Global Health EDCTP3 annual work programmes.

3. Build on existing projects

Search the Global Health EDCTP3 project database to identify already funded initiatives. Explore opportunities for synergies with other EU-funded projects or relevant programmes. Collaboration and complementarity strengthen proposals and increase impact.

4. Create your team

Reach out to potential partners from previous collaborations and check if they are eligible to apply for the call topic. Find partners with complementary expertise and try to ensure a balanced distribution between leading and supporting roles in the team.

5. Network and partner

Unsure about where to start? Join the Global Health EDCTP3 networking platform. Meet potential partners, pitch your project ideas, and schedule online meetings. Boost the chances of success of your consortium and proposal by including (or becoming) a contributing partner. Check the guidelines to learn how.

6. Explore the Horizon Europe guidance

Scientific excellence matters, and so does compliance. Familiarise yourself with Horizon Europe rules and consult Global Health EDCTP3guidance to ensure you meet all administrative, legal, and financial obligations. Watch these videos to prepare a successful project proposal (video 1 and video 2) and check out some key recipes for success.

7. Use the right templates

Strictly follow the template structure and guidelines provided under the call topic in the Funding and Tenders Portal, including formatting and page limits. Ensure that each piece of information is described under the relevant part of the template and avoid repetition between sections. Check out the following example to get started.

8. Understand the evaluation process

Get familiar with the evaluation process and evaluation criteria. In stage 1, there are two evaluation criteria – excellence and impact. In stage 2, there are three evaluation criteria – excellence, quality & efficiency of the implementation, and impact. Do not neglect any of them!

9. Apply on time

Do not wait until the last minute to submit your application, as IT systems and internet connections are not always reliable. Please note that the application deadlines follow the Central European Time (CET) zone.

10. Do you still have questions?

Check the frequently asked questions and answers on the Work Programme 2026 and join the Info Day 2026 on 5 February 2026, from 09:00 to 13:00. During this session, Global Health EDCTP3 representatives will present the call topics, explain financial and legal requirements, and answer all your questions.
